You grew through an age of gun violence and extremism, I’m growing through an age of violent storms and extreme weather.
You wore nose masks to prevent the onslaughts of diseases and pandemics, I’m in nose masks every minute of the day to prevent the onslaughts of the very air I need to exist.
You fought for better education, equality and independence, but the very foundations you laid are threatened by displacing floods and droughts.
You had a place to call home, a den decorated with the beauty of nature you failed to maintain.
You played in grass and mud, I play in carpet and bricks.
OH LOOK! The waters decanted from the atmosphere which made you dance and play till mama called you in, over the sounds of thunder.
You made lemonade as fun projects, which is a luxury in my time, because I plant trees to survive
You fell the very trees that were meant to keep me here for a few bucks to keep you afloat a day or two.
Did you ever think of your actions on my existence? Ever considered leaving a better inheritance than heaps of waste by the sea?
The gaps of the past cannot be compared to the gaps in my tooth, for_
They cannot grow back like the tooth fairy said, they cannot bring back my home swimming away in the last hurricane, they cannot bring back my Somali friend who couldn’t bare this night-mare called hunger, they cannot bring back the money my cousin in the east spends on bills for fresh air just to survive.
I think about my embittered thoughts as I lay on this deathbed on my birthday… and wonder what I could leave in the foot prints of time in my six years of surviving this planet.
My last breaths would rather be saved for these final words: it’s not too late dear millennials and Gen-Zs, you can still do better to save our home and planet before the gaps catch up to my age. Get planet conscious, get planet ready, get the planet green again.
